Our Story

On January 9, 2008 I was a day from being 24 weeks pregnant with twins.  The pregnancy was seemingly uncomplicated and all was going as expected.  That evening I was alone waiting for my husband Stephen to get home late from work.  I had an appt. with my OB the next morning.  I was feeling a little uncomfortable after dinner and just basically thought I had a normal upset stomach from something I ate.  As most people do when their pregnant sometimes you eat too much or the wrong thing and never know when it's going to cause discomfort.  Around 10 or so I went to bed and shortly after Stephen got home and I thought man I feel uncomfortable but I can make it till morning.  Would hate to bother anyone feeling like I had just a bad case of gas.  My lower back was also hurting but I often have trouble with my back and especially so since being pregnant with twins.  This was my first pregnancy so I didn't suspect anything was actually wrong.  I cannot remember the exact timing of everything.  I just know that sometime after going to bed I couldn't stand the discomfort any longer and called my Dr..  I very calmly explained how I thought I must have severe constipation and he suggested getting an enema and if that didn't work call him back.  So I woke up my husband and ask him to please go get one that I really needed help I was feeling so badly.  So off he went... all I can remember in the moments after he took off was thinking "Oh no why did I just send him away"? The pain quickly became much worse and almost immediately after I laid down on the bed I knew this wasn't at all what I thought and "Oh no I'm in labor".  I stood up and my water broke.  A huge wave of fear and panic hit me and right after a sense of calm.  I knew I had to keep my wits about me that this was not me I had to worry about it was the babies.  I calmly called the Dr. again and told him my water broke.  He was shocked told me to go to the hospital ASAP.  So I guess I was just a little too calm as I called my husband to tell him I thought I was having a miscarriage and he needed to come home right now.  As soon as I hung up he called me right back and said call 911.  So I did and as I stood in the bathroom completely disoriented I thought to myself we have time.  Other people take hours after their water breaks to have a baby right?  So as I try to talk to the 911 operator I sit on the toilet thinking that's an obvious choice (later I find out that's completely the wrong choice) my husband returns and checks on me.  He asks if I'm ok and I say yes so he tells me he is going downstairs to flag down the ambulance and show them where I am.  Well in the short time he is down waiting for the ambulance to arrive I feel feet dangling.  Kaleigh is ready to make her entrance into this world even though we are NOT ready for her.  I keep talking to the 911 operator who is trying to help me.  Kaleigh drops into my hands with her cord wrapped around her body.  I lift her up and see her trying to breathe.  The 911 operator is asking if I have an aspirator.  I do not.  Then she asks me to get a blanket but she is so tiny I am afraid to move to get one.  I see my little girl trying to breathe and am completely helpless.  Shortly after Stephen comes up with the first paramedic.  Their jaws drop and the paramedic Lisa was her name came to help us.  She wrapped Kaleigh in a towel then the rest of the paramedics coming rushing in.  They decide to cut Kaleigh's umbilical cord.  This whole time I haven't had any pain or at least hadn't had time to notice.  But as soon as that cord was cut I immediately went into labor again and they rushed me to our bed.  I remember pushing and Braden screaming at the top of his lungs as if to say "Hey I was not ready to come out".  I thought how he shouldn't be able to scream his lungs aren't suppose to be developed enough yet.  Then the paramedic asked if I was ok and if we wanted to see Braden.  I was like NO get him to out of here.  We just wanted him to go so he could get the help he needed.  Braden and Kaleigh both were transferred by ambulance to Summit hospital.  How they ever made it through such a dramatic birth is amazing in it's self but the days to follow were even more surprising.  Summit hospital isn't even equipped to handle 24 weekers.  So they flew in Dr.'s from Centennial to help stabilize the babies.  Once they were stable we were all three transferred to Baptist Hospital's NICU.  The days to follow have been documented in this blog.  Later on Jan 23rd our daughter and Braden's twin sister Kaleigh passes away.  She lived 13 days and fought hard for her own survival.  She was an amazingly strong infant who did her best to overcome incredibly difficult odds.  She was at Vanderbilt for a surgery when she passed away.  She had two major infections.  One of which was yeast the other something to the equivalent of ecoli.  It is extremely important in the first days of life for a preemie to have a bowel movement.  If not it will make them very sick and can take their life.  One of these two infections can take a babies life but two is asking too much even for the strongest of babies.  She was strong and it was so hard to see her life taken.  In the days to follow it was very difficult but we pressed on because of Braden.  He too was very sick.  Sicker than we really understood at the time.  Later we would find out after 4 months of being in the NICU that Braden too was on the brink of death after Kaleigh's passing.   He was tested for yeast and our great and wonderful Dr.'s made sure that he was on fluconazole before the test results came back.  That was the only thing that saved his life because if they had waited till he showed symptoms for the illness he wouldn't have made it.  Braden looked to be doing great before that and no one would have suspected he was ate up with yeast.  Later we found out that he had it in his blood, his kidneys and in his bones.  The infectious disease department at Vanderbilt would later tell us Braden was the worst case of yeast they had ever seen that had survived.  Just a few short months after that there was a local news piece on how Vanderbilt now gives babies fluconazole after birth and later tests them for yeast just to protect the babies.

Braden is now 5 1/2 years old.  In preschool and will be in special needs PreK in the fall. Braden is still delayed in several areas but is bright, loving, almost always happy and our main concern right now for him is his lack of speech.  We don't know if it's strictly a mechanical issue or developmental or maybe both but we are working on finding that out.  We also went on to have another child on May 24, 2010.  Grayson was our full term son and much to our surprise was diagnosed with Autism just a few months before his third birthday.  He is bright, funny, and has some amazing strengths.   He will be starting special needs PreK in the fall.  If they can improve his communication skills and catch up the skills he may be short in he will be eligible for a modified preK class that will focus on mostly his social deficits and hopefully move on to a regular Kindergarten class.  This blog is dedicated to our boys and the memory of our daughter Kaleigh Grace.

About Me

My photo

I am a stay at home Mommy to two beautiful boys ages 8 and 6.  I am also Mommy to one little girl who blessed us with 13 days of life.  Our road may be crazy and full of surprises but in this household Autism exist but doesn't define who my children are or will become.  I am also a blogger.  I love to write about our families crazy journey through life.  We love, laugh and suffer sometimes but we stick together and always seem to keep growing and going.
